2-5PM - REACH - Marketing & Sustainability Workshop w/ Daniel Gallant, Executive Director of Nuyorican Poets Cafe, New York

The Cap City Cyphers team is committed to learning, sharing, and building community around Hip-Hop, and so we have invited the Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a historical veteran venue/presenter in New York. We will be learning ways to market, build, and sustain our brand as presenters, as well as understanding the impact it would have on the greater Ottawa Hip-Hop community. We cordially invite all Hip-Hop hosts to join us in learning from and building bridges between Ottawa and the birthplace of Hip-Hop, New York City.

This workshop is intended for people who are interested in building and sustaining a vibrant and resourceful community for Hip-Hop artists, organizations, and venues. This workshop will focus on the business of Hip-Hop arts covering brand building and growing networks. This workshop will also provide an opportunity for Ottawa Hip-Hop artists to build a connection with the director of a venue in the heart of New York City. Daniel will also be present during our Open Mic after the Cypher.

6:13-8:19PM - SESSION 16 CAP CITY CYPHERS ft Knock-Ternal Rhyme Sessions & Eyeda Sophia

Cap City Cyphers organizes and operates on the traditional land of the Algonquin Anishinaabe people. You can learn more about this land claim thanks to Lynn Gehl, PHD here: https://www.lynngehl.com/black-face-blogging/algonquin-anishinaabe-land-acknowledgement

Our main goals at Cap City Cyphers are: 1) to hold safer spaces for creatives to share, foster, and develop skills related to Hip-Hop culture, mainly freestyle emceeing, beatmaking, and live drawing, as well as 2) to keep Hip-Hop culture alive by hosting freestyle rap sessions and presenting educational programming related to Hip-Hop

The intention of our series is to unite all Hip-Hop enthusiasts such as rappers, producers, and visual artists, especially artists who are living in the margins of the Ottawa/Gatineau and surrounding areas to explore their creativity in an inclusive and safer space, so we encourage attendees to refrain from rapping or engaging in any hate speech including but not limited to misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and racism. Hip-Hop has been historically a marginalized genre of music, and within that lies further ostracizing of Hip-Hop artists who are racialized, womxn, and queer. While holding this awareness at the forefront, we will not censor or shun people who might be problematic because we also believe that "cancel culture" can be just as harmful. Instead, our method of resolution to keep this a safer space for artists who are racialized, queer, and womxn as an organization is to hold people accountable for their Word by calling them in to a discussion on its power. https://www.facebook.com/pg/capcitycyphers/about

"Knock-Ternal Rhyme Sessions is the brainchild of underground, bicoastal, Hip Hop artist Enrae Mercer. Better known as Super King Armor. It is a cypher welcome to beatboxers, poets, singers, musicians, conga players, producers who would like to showcase their beats via boombox, or pill, DJ's you name it! Plus rappers/Mc's of all skill levels are welcome. How else are you gonna get your bars up? Unless you rap with people who are better than you?"

" Eyeda Sophia is a Toronto born, Canadian-Caribbean rap-poet. Her rhymes are fueled by magnetic energy, feverish passion and vivid storytelling. Eyeda unpacks tales of growth and triumph via spoken-word like delivery and a facile flow. She has curated several Toronto based cyphers and events, in support of safer, more inclusive spaces to enjoy rap.

In a single year following the release of her debut tape "Much Love", Eyeda has performed at Long Winter, UNITY Fest, Manifesto, The Rex, Ontario Place, the AGO, the Royal Ontario Museum and venues all across Ontario.

She continues to represent the rebirth of new age Hip-Hop; a place for queer, marginalized and femme peoples.
