LIFE LESSONS POETICALLY

about the album:

Life Lessons Poetically is a reflection of lived experiences by King Kimbit, born as Nguyễn Anh Thư, daughter of two educators from the Vietnamese “boat people” diaspora whose refuge on turtle island had brought them together. This collection of poems, along with the respective musical arrangements, illustrate the lessons learned and insight gained so far in the quarter century of the journey through intersections. Despite the inevitable presence of oppressive white supremacy and patriarchy, there is beauty in telling stories of life and death, revealing the healing and survival of women and the world.

“My mission is to instill the vision that still, we glisten, and to continue to remind us that no light can blind us when standing in truth”.

To watch in silence as the world around you burns to ashes, is to add wind to the fire, helping it grow. No longer can I hold my tongue as ignorance reigns supreme convincing my people there is a drought in knowledge, when in fact there is limitless light abundant in each and every one of us. I know for a fact that if we all lit up together in love and unison, the sun would acknowledge our harmony and shine on us rewardingly.

To achieve peace, its absence must first be acknowledged. To heal pain, its root causes must be identified and addressed. The collective breath of the universe is escaping from our dialect, swept away to be hidden under the rug of mindless propaganda, along with discourse on our collective trauma. Let us remove the constrictive hands of deception from our necks, and allow ourselves to inhale. I invite you, whenever you are ready, to join me as i learn to breathe.

credits & acknowledgements:

As a resident of Ottawa, Ontario, I would like to acknowledge that most operations for this project have been conducted here, on traditional unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin people. To them, I extend my gratitude. My life, and therefore this album, would not be possible without my parents Nguyen Hong Nhung and Duc Tam. Thank you, mom and dad.

I would like to thank Anthony Bansfield for encouraging me to apply for the grant that sparked the creation of this album, and a big thanks to Lillian Allen for inspiring you. Thank you to Canada Council for the Arts for granting me the funds, and to the City of Ottawa for the same. Thank you Kahlil and the Lawson family in Mandeville for their generous hospitality during my stay. Thank you Cill Awesumore for the connection. Thank you Thais Davis for the hospitality and connections when I stayed in Georgia. Thank you to the Henry family for allowing and encouraging me to record Dovi’s work. Thank you Wahid Gomes at Dammahum Recording Studio, VinDon at Rudebwoy Studios, Carde Blanche at Audio Valley, Clayton Connell at InHouse Studio, Sergio Guerra at The Grotto, and Maxhole for helping me with the recording process. Thank you Black Wax [Peterson Altimo (bass), Robbie Rigg (guitar), Salah Adam (drums)] for working tirelessly with me on all the band tracks. Thank you everyone who has touched the pen or mic for a piece on the album. All tracks mastered by Phame 1.

Just as importantly, thank you activists and community organizers for all the work that you do. I wouldn’t be me without you. I’d also like to thank my partner PJ “Buck Zero” Williams for being by my side throughout the creation and production of this album.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has touched me, encouraged me, and inspired me through the journey, and to those who allow me to do the same for them. Nothing would be possible without you!
